The life of Saint John of Rila influenced many saints, among whom was Saint Seraphim of Sarov, who, inspired by Saint John, prayed on a stone for a thousand days. Saint John of Kronstadt took his name from Saint John of Rila.
From the Rila mountain range, which is essentially part of the Rhodope Mountains, flow the rivers Evros and Nestos.
