The Serbian language is one of the Slavic languages spoken on the Balkan Peninsula.
The Slavic languages are divided into West Slavic, East Slavic, and South Slavic.

West Slavic languages include, among others, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Upper Sorbian, Lower Sorbian, Kashubian, Rusyn, and others.

East Slavic languages include, among others, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Russian.

South Slavic languages include, among others, Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, and Bulgarian.

Although the Slavic languages of predominantly Orthodox peoples are written exclusively in the Cyrillic alphabet, Serbian is the only one of all the Slavic languages that officially uses both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets in its writing; however, in Serbian ecclesiastical texts, only the Cyrillic alphabet is used.
