Saint Metrophanes, or Chang Yang-Chi, was born on December 10, 1855.
His parents were Orthodox and nurtured him with the essence of the Faith.
His teacher, Yuren Long-Yuan, prepared Saint Metrophanes for the priesthood from the time the Saint was still a toddler. As soon as Metrophanes turned 25, he was ordained by Bishop Saint Nicholas of Japan.
During the "Boxer" Rebellion in 1900, he, his wife, Saint Tatiana, two of their sons, Saints John and Isaiah, and Saint Isaiah's wife, Saint Maria, were martyred. The third son of Saints Metrophanes and Tatiana, Sergius, managed to escape and later became a high priest.

Discover a treasure of the Church unknown to many in "Little and Orthodox 83," and may we resemble the teacher of Saint Metrophanes, preparing from infancy, with discernment and in complete purity, the sons the Lord has entrusted to us for the priesthood and our daughters to be presvyteras or nuns.

May the largest port in the Mediterranean soon be liberated from Chinese communist occupation through the intercessions of Saint Metrophanes.
